Land Simulation (LS) Core 2.0

LS Core 2.0 is the next evolution of military computer simulation training software and systems, specifically developed for the Australian Army. It will enable Army's synthetic training environment with world class virtual and constructive simulation, C41 integration and federation management software. Introduced on an enhanced and expanded Land Simulation Network covering more than 50 sites around the country, LS Core 2.0 will support the conduct of high-end military collective training; allowing the Australian Army to fight tomorrow's war, today.

Tranche 1 of the project includes a suite of common simulation software and high-quality data, models and behaviours specifically developed for the Australian Army. The $17.6 million Tranche 1 contract represents part of a broader Defence investment in simulation for training and reinforces the Australian Government’s commitment to investing in sovereign-capability technology. Through LS Core 2.0 Tranche 1 soldiers and commanders will now have access to Common Simulation Software through various platforms to train in realistic and relevant settings, contributing to Army’s future ready posture. The new software will be rolled out across Army’s Land Simulation Network over the next two years and includes military vehicle and weapon platforms. Tranche 2 of the Project will deliver an expanded Land Simulation Network to allow Army to virtually connect its geographically-dispersed capabilities and training locations.

Contour has been at the heart of this project since its inception in 2019, providing the deep level simulation technical knowledge to support the development of project artefacts, approach to market documentation and the conduct of competitive trials. Over the past 3 years Contour has provided:

• The Technical Risk Reduction Team, a 4-person team consisting of simulation program delivery specialists, ICT and Integration Solution Architects and a Simulation specific Requirements Engineer. The Risk Reduction Team was responsible for engaging with Joint Project 9711-1 – Core Simulation Capability and Army’s simulation stakeholders to generate requirements and solutions across four key areas; Common Simulation Systems, the Land Simulation Network Expansion, C4ISREW Stimulation and broader System Integration including terrain and data subsets. Under this remit the Risk Reduction Team was responsible activities such as:

• The design, build and implementation of networked simulation environments for the purpose of trial activities and Mobile Battle Simulation Site Risk Reduction Activities.

• The development of C4ISREW stimulation requirements and functional performance specifications for the synthetic environment.

• Documenting and development of the integrated Joint Fires synthetic training environment High Level Design, including connection and integration of the Joint Terminal Attack Controller Dome (JTAC), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Land Simulation Network and LS Core.

• The Capability Assurance Team, a 2-person team consisting of simulation program and service delivery specialists. The Capability Assurance Team is currently supporting the Introduction-Into-Service of the Tranche 1 components while supporting the technical development of Tranche 2 requirements and Artefacts.

• The Land Integration Team - Lead. The Land Integration Team was part of the Project Sponsor's team, a 3-person team designed to provide technical expertise and support to the Delivery Agency on behalf of the Project Sponsor, Directorate of Land Training Capability - Army. Contour provided the Team Lead for this group, a highly skilled Project Engineer Manager with over a decade's worth of experience in the technical implementation of simulation solutions and systems. The Team Lead was responsible for overseeing the development of the Capability Realisation Plan and the Project Sponsor input to project artefacts, competitive trials, tender evaluation activities and contract negotiations.
